See my post. Pre-turbo is the ONLY way to go. Post-turbo, the exhaust has already cooled 150-250*F and you can not get an accurate idea of what the EGT is as it's leaving the exhaust ports, and that is the critical temp for valve, head, and piston survival!

Well, I've already drilled and tapped my exhaust manifold since it and the turbo are off due to my pulling both heads, so it was really easy to do. The spot I used was that little square pad cast onto the front of the manifold just below the turbo mount. It's like that's what it was cast for.

On, it's a bugger, and you always run the risk of metal shavings getting into the turbo. That said, the trick everyone uses mounted is to idle the engine while drilling and tapping to blow the chips out of the hole. Try this tip also: Take a powerful magnet and stroke the drill bits and tap that you are going to use lengthwise about thirty times, this will magnetize them and chips will cling to them that don't get blown out. Use three bits, 1/8, 1/4, and the final size recommended on the 1/8th pipe-thread tap. It will make drilling easier and more accurate. Shut the engine off after drilling to let the manifold cool down. Once cool, restart the engine and tap the hole. Use some light machine oil to lube the tap, once started, go 1/2 turn forward, 1/4 turn backwards while tapping to clear the tap flutes of chips (no broken tap), and only run the tap in half way to keep the pipe taper.

Congratulations, you can now screw in your probe.

PS: Make sure what size pipe thread the probe needs to be tapped to. Most use 1/8 pipethreads, but some use 1/4. Always best to get it right the first time.

Hope this helps.----by Husker

Another trick taught to me by an oldtimer, is to fill the flutes of the tap with good old fashoned lard. It lubes the tap and collects the shavings too.

As far as the boost gauge tube goes, someone on here posted a picture of where they drilled and tapped for the boost. It was on the intake manifold on the driver's side, right below where the FSD Heatsink would be mounted. I drilled mine about 2" from the rubber tube that connects the turbo to the intake. I had issues last July driving accross Utah. It melted off 3 times on that trip. I'm thinking about either adding a 6" metal tube at the manifold or moving it to the other side and plugging the present hole.

When you drill and tap the intake take off the top half. If you stand in front of the engine and look at the manifold I have my fitting going in at about the one o clock position on the back side by the fire wall. The pyro is easy also. Pull the right front tire off, pull the fender flap off. Just below the turbo foot in the exhaust manifold (out side) there is a little boss cast in the manifold. I put my hole right in the center of that boss. The inner fender is in the way to get a straight shot at it. So I used a long 1/4" bit and drilled right through the fender then into the manifold. MY adapter is 1/4" MPT so the tap drill is 7/16" Then I opened the fender hole to 1 /2" to put a 3/8" drive extension through to turn the tap. This is all done with the engine idling to blow out the chips. This worked for me!! Good Luck!!

just where exactly do you put the trani temp sender? Looked all over and cant seem to find the port that is talked about that it will just screw into..any ideas? Also where do i hook into the light dimmer switch to dim the lights in the guages?

and just how do i hook the wire to this sender????

A female spade connector will slide right onto that sensor, as for mounting I'd think that the best way would be to remove the pan, weld an insert into it and reinstall it, but that's just my thinking :D

i found the test port. it is on the drivers side behind the shift control, where the wiring harness connects. Kind of a pain to get to, but it beats having to drain the oil and do any drilling and tapping. :)

To hook the lights up to the dimmer switch I removed the lower dash panel then popped off the upper dash cover (suprisingly easy). Then I took a test light and touched the connectors until I found one that lit the test light and dimmed when turning the dimmer. The wire was green I think. Spiced into it and works great.

OOPs, I just saw your other post in the electrical section.

Thanks for posting where you found to plug in the trans temp. I've been wondering that myself.

not a problem, one thing about the trans temp sender. My guage kit didnt have the connecter to hook the sending unit to the sending wire. I guess it got missed in packing or something. Anyway i made one by pinching a spade connector around the "thumb tack" part and it seems to be working like it should.

You don't even have to remove anything. Under the dash, to the right of the E-brake pedal is a terminal block mounted to the firewall with several open male spade connectors, looks like a fuse block. The upper left is on the panel light dimmer circuit. Confirm this, or one of the ones next to it, as being active. Plug and go. The previous owner of my truck installed some purple bullet lights under the dash to "mood light" the footwells. I followed his wiring back to there when I was finding a source for my guages. Hey what can I say, the truck came from East Texas, you should see the curley pinstripe accents on the fenders and doors! They are tasteful, not gaudy. If I ever get a digital camera, I'll have to have my 14 year old son show me how to post pictures!!!

I got the trans sending unit in. Boy Christja when you said kind of a pain to get to you weren't kidding. Thanks Husker 6.5 for the heads up on on the terminal block. That saved me a bunch of trouble looking for a switched power lead.
