Whats up guys. I just bought a 99 GMC Crew Cab dually with the 6.5L in it. Ive been building custom trucks for several years now but this is my first diesel. Ive already ordered 4" exhaust and an intake kit from Walt. Next plan is the marine injectors and FSD heat sync. This is my daily driver and I pull an 18ft car trailer all over the southeast to truck shows. Are there any recomendations?

Take the front grill off, loosen the engine, trans, pwr str, a/c, and radiator coolers. Clean out all the junk and fuzz in between them and on the bottom of the core support. Then take a hose and blast through all the coolers backwards...hold the hose on the engine side and spray towards the front bumper. All those coolers tend to grab more junk off the road. I did this in the summer and my temps dropped 8-10 degrees F on the coolant, and the A/C blew colder, quicker. All kinds of muddy, junky, crud was pushed out with the hose.

Thanks man. Wouldnt be a bad idea to flush those lines. The truck seems to have only seen highway miles because its spotless on the underside. No leaks, mud, road grime, etc. Looks like an 05 model on the underside and in the engine bay. I picked it up in orlando and imediately loaded a 1/2 ton truck on my trailer and drove it straight home to GA. Got about 500 miles on her so far and everything seems to be in very good condition. Averaged about 11mpg on the intersate running 75-80 hauling a truck on the trailer. Not as good as I hoped but no worse than my other gas dually.

didnt mean flush the lines. although that wouldnt hurt. What I mean is cleaning out the junk in the fins on the coolers themselves. Bugs, mud, leaves and so forth that get lodged in between the fins and kill air flow.

Let me know if ya do that, the hose thing, I'm going to do it this weekend if the Atlanta weather stays like this.. Also when ya get ready to do the injectors the last two on each bank near the firewall are a bear to get at but can be done. I just did mine and got a big boost in mileage, changed both thermostats too and temps droped to a little above 180, gonna change to the green coolant with "Water Wetter" I have a bottle in with fresh red now and I swear by it. You can get it at Pep Boyz!
Enjoy your diesel!

Thanks for the info so far guys. Tonight I installed my 4" exhaust and intake from SSD. Gotta a stainless 5" tip thats coming in tomorrow to finish the exhaust off. After I lower it this weekend, I will post up some pics.

One other thing you definently need to look into, probably before you start going for any power mods (outside of intake and exhaust), would be some gauges. Boost and egt are probably the two most important, but a 3 pod pillar mount with those two gauges and say a tranny temp gauge will keep things monitored.

No doubt. Those are coming very soon also. Next on my agenda will be the gauges and marine injectors.

You already got the FSD covered, that's #1, good work. Next I would inspect the oil cooler lines, they are noted for leaking (which mine are as we speak) and then all out letting go....they have a really cheesy fitting that goes into the block by the oil filter housing, that becomes wore after getting rattled and shaken for so many miles.....my father in-law lost his 6.5 to this, scored the cam bearings, and a couple mains. The newer 6.5's are a little better, I think it's either 97 or 98 and up they have oil spray on the piston skirts, so that will work well for ya hopefully- pulling especially! Good luck,
ryan
