No major league hockey out here, but we do have a USHL team, the Lincoln Stars. They won a league championship their first year in 96, and two since. Not bad hockey for a group of 16, 17 and 18 year-olds. Our venue, the Ice Box puts almost 4600 fans in for every home match, the largest in the league. You wouldn't believe the lights, sound, and special effects that have been installed.
It always freaks out first-time visiting players who are used to playing in front of 200- 300 at their home arenas to have our boys skate out onto the ice for their introductions through the wall of fog and the illuminated giant Stars logo while the intelli-beams and chase lights cover the ice and the team theme blasts from the 10,000 watt sound system and 4600 screaming fans greet each Stars player.
We've had many of the players (who come from all over, including Canada, to play while living here with a host family and going to High School) go on to play NCAA Div. I hockey in college, and we even have one now playing in the NHL! Yes, there is more to do here sports-wise than Husker Football!
Speaking of which, Walt, our former quarterback and Assistant Head Coach, Turner Gill, is now calling the shots as Head Coach at Buffalo University.

The Wild beat up on the Ducks last night with a 4-1 win, but should have been a 5-1. Very poor refs. The Wild have their hands full with these Ducks and need to keep it together for the next 3 games.

USHL playoffs have started, and the Lincoln Stars are in and are coming off a hot streak to finish the regular season. Keep ya posted.

:( Stars got swept in 4 straight in the opening round of the USHL playoffs by a team that we beat up on at the end of the regular season. Sports, go figure?
