So i am in the need of paiting my truck. I need to fix the rust before it takes over :) has anyone ever had macco paint any car for them? or do you guys do it yourself, Im trying to compare my time and money or my money and having macco paint it. Im going to prep everything and strip the truck down from bumpers to door handles and putting crappy wheels on it. Should I primer it myself or have the paint shop do it. All help is appreciated!!!

I am by no means a professional painter but I have some experiance doing body work and paint. A paint job is one of those things where you get out of it what you put in. It's very work intensive (unless your a pro) so you have to weigh the time you'll spend against how much to pay someone else. It also depends on the quality of work you want done. If your looking for a show quality job, bend over it's going to hurt. Macco is a fast turn around business - getem in / getem out - and their prices reflect that. If you do the prep work and just have them paint it and you don't like it they will only be responsible for the paint not the dents and waves you may have missed. On the other hand if you prep and paint it yourself you only have you to blame if it doesn't come out to you liking and if you do like it you'll have the pride to say you did it yourself. A paint job all boils down to what you want, what you can do and how much you want to spend. If your good with your hands and know someone with some experiance that can help you go for it. Body work is not hard it's just time consuming and can be frustrating when trying to get the last few waves out of a panel. The major rule with rust is it has to be cut out and new metal welded in. Rust will always come back but if you don't cut it out it comes back in months rathers than years.

while you are on the rust repairs, it is just as important to protect the metal on the inside. I live on the salt flats and have found that products that contain tannic acid are very good for stopping the rust on the inside. Here are some products, Rust Seal, by Hocking Chemical Corp National city (San Diego) $50 per gal tel 1800 222 8599 very good product, but the last time I called, a salesman that was a complete ashole did not want to supply me. The other product I have used, which needs to be painted over as is not so good but $23 per gal is Corroseal made by that company in Seattle WA tel 1800 237 1573
You can look for closer manufacturers on the internet, this stuff soaks into the rust and stops it. Incedently, I have given up cutting out and putting in new metal, I grind off the rust, spray the Rust seal in through the holes and put fiberglass over the area, it lasts longer. In the end, there won't be anything left to rust.
