Nice new site....
I was hoping that someone could give me a hand with figuring out these codes, 13 and 87. I just found the codes in some other posts. Code 13 is for the Engine Shut off solenoid circuit, and code 87 is for 'high ratio'.

The truck seems to be running fine, maybe a little low in power, although the other day it almost stalled and seemed to turn over longer before it started. I put some diesel injector cleaner and fuel conditioner in it hoping that it was maybe something in the fuel etc. I changed the fuel filter and pulled the FUEL SOS fuse like it says in the book.

I'm not getting any code 12's like I've read on other threads. No other recent work other than a tire rotation. Found out that the abs sensor wires in the front are broken, I guess they rubbed against the tire and broke in half. I don't think that this would cause the issues.
Any help or direction where or what to check would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

You have the correct answers to the codes 13 & 87. My experience with my '95 is that I never get a 12 code as long as there are other codes saved. When I reset the codes, I get the 12 code (and it repeats forever) at that point but the other codes are gone.

You may want to reset your codes and continue to drive it to see if you can repeat the event that triggered the codes. The 3 possible results will be, no return of any code except 12, the same codes or new codes will be saved in very short time or if you eventually repeat the same event as before, the 13 & 87 codes will be saved later down the road.

Did you get the SES light or did you just check for the codes and found them? If you didn't get a light, those codes could be real old and meaningless to your current conditions.

Good luck.

Thanks for getting back to me 6.5
The ses did not light up, I just checked the codes after putting in a fuel filter after the engine seemed to stumble the other day. May be coincidence or the stumble may be the reason for the tripped codes.
I checked the codes about a month ago, and only the 12 code that I understand is that everything is fine, came up.
I tried to reset the codes by holding the brake and accelerator for about 15-20 seconds. I ran the truck later but it didn't look like the codes reset. I think I'm doing the reset correctly.
Wud the engine run if the fuel shut off solenoid was on the way out? I read on the ssdiesel site, that a code 13 may be tripped by the fuel shut off solenoid. The truck just seems a bit weak on the power at the moment, but runs ok, no excessive smoke or anything....
thanks

The fuel cutoff solonoid is about the only thing that I haven't had trouble with yet. I'm not sure of the symptoms but I would imagine other than the obvious that the engine will not shut off, if the electromagnet was weak or failing, the valve may not open far enough to let the proper amount of fuel into the pump.
I think the way the valve works is that the current holds the valve open with the key on and when the current is shut off, the spring loaded valve closes. If this is the case, the valve could surely starve the pump. I wouldn't take any chances, just replace the solonoid and move on.

Also, don't think for 1 minute that if you have no codes that everything is OK. When everything truly is OK, you will have a 12 code, but a lot of times I have had to repair things on my engine without any other codes tripped.

I also highly recommend gauges if you don't have them. The codes are not failsafe in warning you of problems, but the gauges are. In my opinion, the best $$ I spent was on them!!
