hi, has anyone ever removed their EGR valve?

i live in canada and emmisions are practically non existant here, so i was wondering if one can remove the EGR without messing with anything, as i dont want to pump sooty diesel exhaust back into my engine.

just curious as to if it messes with ecm stuff, or physical engine operation.

I am getting an engine built and most likely deleting the vacuum pump. Therefore the EGR and the vacuum boost. My engine guy is getting all the details about deleting the EGR. He knows it is the thing to do, but he is speaking to someone who is knowledgable.

To take full advantage of deleting the EGR, you get a non egr intake. This frees up the flow, since the egr components on the intake creat a restriction.

Anyway, I hope to get an informative answere from him very soon.

Deleting the egr, vacuum pump and installing a mechanical wastegate, you end up with a more efficient powerplant yielding more power and better fuel efficientcy. I believe the emissions are acutally cleaner with the boost turned up to 12-13 psi along with these other changes.

Remove ? Than you have to change the upper and the lower intake to one from an "F" engine with EGR. Leave it where it is, but remove the hose between the EGR-valve and the solenoid and close the short rubber hose at the solenoid with a screw. No more function for the egr, no intake change, no cost (only for the screw,if you have to buy one :D ).

Did it on mine and got no problems.

Just to verify,
You disconnected the hose from the EGR valve to the solenoid and placed a screw to plug the hose. Did the ECM throw out any codes? Was there a noticable change in performance or other mechanics?

Thanks,

I did this mod... Yah, the truck throws an EGR related code about every 4th time I drive it...... I just ignore em.. this truck is a habitual code-thrower anyhow... :D

Doesn't seem to have hurt performance, nor really improved it either..... I just don't like having exhaust gunk pumped down my engine.......

I would definately get an "F" intake as that EGR crap is a major air-intake restriction.... Kills me how people will put dirt-sucking K&N filters on to "reduce restriction" then live with a honkin' EGR apparatus that fills approx 75% of their intake.........

Just my $.02

It is not mandatory to replace the intake, that is why I used the phrase, "To take full advantage of deleting the EGR, you get a non egr intake. " As Matt mentioned too.

I really respect my source, he has a lot of experience with these engines and trust he will get me accurate details. I will follow up with what he tells me.

No, NO CODES ! Until your truck is equipped with a MAF Sensor at the air intake it should not throw any codes. Defenitly until 1995 because OBD I and no MAF sensor. Mine is a 1995 with an "S" engine.

No meachanic change, but (i think) a little more faster reaction if you push the throttle - could be the cleaner intake air (without soot).

Cu,
Sven

BTW : Codes, don't know if your will throw than ? Try it out ! Close the hose at the solenoid with the screw and dirve. See what happens- No codes -> good. EGR codes - bad, so you have to reconnect the hose to the EGR valve. and if you want to get rid of completely, you have to switch to a HD computer of an "F" engine without EGR.

I was putting my upper intake back on after removing the webbing in the upper intake. Somehow, i broke an ear off the egr valve. So instead of getting a new one, i got a frost plug(cant remember what size) and plugged the hole in the intake. Got new Gaskets. Fabricated a 3/8" piece of flat stock(Traced around EGR valve And cut out). And bolted back up. Plugged the vac. line and never looked back! No codes either.
