I have not heard about the 6.6 duramax and Allison Auto being put in Suburbans, Yukons, ETC. However, I don't think it will fit with out extensive modification. :(
Although, Cadillac developed a 2.9L V6 Turbo Diesel with 250HP and 406LB-FT of torque :D (Similar numbers to a stock 6.5 with less than half the displacement)for the European luxury car market in 2009. Rumor is that this is going to be a diesel option (Probably in different tune) for the half ton trucks and SUVs since size and weight will not be a problem. It would make sense to use this motor in the US light truck market because it would help cover the cost of engine development and will pass current and up coming US emissions regs.
For more info see: http://www.motorauthority.com/cars/general-motors/cadillacs-550nm-v6-diesel-powerhouse/
I want to put one in my friend's Ford Festiva. :D

Could we be seeing a 1/2 ton or suburban diesel in the next 2-3 years?

The reason for no diesels in the burbs and 1/2 tons is that the stupid government put 1/2tons & burbs in the "SUV" emissions class, which is actually the same as the large car class... The D-max (or cummins or powerstroke, etc..) just can't pass those kinds of emissions requirements.....

The engine in the article is part of the "BlueTec" family, and will pass the passenger emissions requirements. We aren't that far away from seeing the Big Two-and-a-Half introducing light-duty diesels into the mid-size SUV and pick-up segment up to 1/2 ton. Ford has plans in the works for a V-6 version of the 6.4 PowerJoke for the Ranger/F-150 platforms, respectively. So does GM with a V-6 version of the DuraMax platform for the 1500 series, and possibly a V-4 for the Colorado platform. With what's going on, no telling what's up with Chrysler!!

Even though anybody who knows mopar would love to see a cummins 4bt in some smaller trucks, I believe they fall under the same emissions laws that keeps GM from putting a DMAX in a suburban.
Jeep is mopar now and dodge has been putting MB diesels in two trucks with great success, and I-4 in the Jeep Liberty and and I-5 in the sprinter trucks. Rumor is that next year they will be offering a grand cherokee with an MB V-6 diesel with 250hp and 400lbft of torque. Jeep stopped offering the liberty diesel because of emissions laws but they should be complient with the new MB's.
As far as I know, [besides cost, and hey, whats the DMAX option right now $7000+] nobody ever says anything bad about a cummins or a MB diesel. Mopar has made some good choices when it comes to engines.

I thought the diesel in the Liberty was an Italian VM Motori, not actually a MB engine. Of course, the way these guys have been buying/selling each other the past few years, who really knows!

If anybody followed the sales of the diesel jeep liberty; within a month of releasing the diesel liberty, jeep had sold over 3 times what they had expected to sell in a year.
yet the diesel liberty was still only on the market for a year because the #@($#!()#!*% EPA decided to change particulate emissions laws. (stupid a-holes)
Everbody gives the automakers such a hard time for producing cars with low gas mileage, but actually they are being locked into it by the governments emissions and safety regulations. The toyota puris is capable of 40% better mileage, except for the fact the they are requrired to add nearly 500 pounds of weight to an already good car.

VM Motori got bought by MB before the Liberty ever made it to market, or so I'm told......
Yep, BlueTec is the future, and being that it's MB technology, it just goes to prove one thing:
Those who invented the car will continue to lead the market with inovation! :D

Why put a durmax in a suburban when it would probably be much easier to make a duramax into a suburban.
What is the wheelbase of a short bed regular cab dmax? It's probably the same if not very close to a suburban. Take the body of a suburban and put it on the d-max frame and call it a day.

Check out April or maybe it's May's Diesel Power. They have an article on the Sub Urban Gorilla (which is what I think njdevi11 was refering to on his post on the stand-alone Allison controller), which started out as a regular Suburban. By the time they were done with it, from dropping in a complete D-Max drivetrain and dash, to adding an aftermarket Hummer 4-door body, the only thing left Suburban was the highly modified frame.

I realize this is an old topic but i'm broke and incredibly bored, so ive been sitting here for hours trying to find stuff to do. I figured GM stopped making a diesel burb because it might not have been selling as well as they wanted. Thats the reason the excursion is gone. And I really liked the excursion too, as long as its got the powerstroke. No V8 or V10 for me in that big beast. I do wish they would put a d-max in a burb tho, that would be awesome. If they built it on a 3/4ton frame like mine, couldnt they get around the 1/2ton/car emissions regulations?

Yes, but 3/4 ton suburbans haven't been available for years...............

This is true. They really dont have a rating anymore like that really, but i think they would be considered a half ton. They should throw some 8 lug wheels on and bigger brakes and and call it a 3/4 ton, if they want a diesel. Wouldnt that work?

Thank the EPA Nazis for reclassifying 'burbs and 'cursions as SUVs not Light Trucks starting with the 2000 MY. Thus, they had to meet more stringent emissions regulations and could no longer have diesel power.
As for getting a new style body (2001+) 'burb with a D-Max, check out the November issue of Diesel Power, there's a company out in Denver that takes a donor 3/4 or 1T P/U and transplants its complete drivetrain, electronics, and dash into late-model 'burbs. Depending on years involved, and if you want a factory crate D-Max/Allison, starts at about $50K and goes up.

Got my 2007 GMC Full Line & Chevy Suburban Brochures. GMC shows a 3/4 Ton Yukon X/L pulling a big boat, and the Chevy Suburban brochure has a page dedicated to the 3/4 ton, towing cap of 9,200 lbs. Spec sheet on the Chevy brochure lists 6.0L and a Hydra-Matic (I presume 4L80E), and 3/4 ton only options (big fuel tank, Engine & Transmission coolers)
I have also seen many 3/4 ton C/K Suburbans/Yukon XL around too.
So the 3/4 ton Suburbans/Yukon XLs are alive & well.
But, the 6.0L/4L80E being the biggest engine/transmission combo means that a Duramax/Allison combo would not fit under the (stock) body, you would need a body lift.

See my post before yours. This company out in Denver covers every base, including the body lift, to put a D-Max in a late model Suburban. I do mean every base, and they are now starting to mod the D-Maxes so you can have a 600+HP suburban!!
It can be, and has been, done quite professionally for a couple of years now. All it takes is the $$$ to buy one.
