i have a 1993 gmc it has 146000 miles on it i have put marine injectors in but did not notice a big difference i noticed at low rpm before the turbo kicks in at 1300 rpms i have black smoke but as rpms go up i start to lose it and when i go up a hill boost goes up to 15 or 16 psi but no extra black smoke with the pump turned up and marine injectors should i not be smoking all the time when under a large load? is the pump going out on meand is that why it does not pull good egt is 1200 deg under a load and 15 to 17 lbs of boost:) :D

The black smoke below 1300 rpm is because your turbo hasn't spooled up enough to provide enough boost (oxygen) to completely combust all the fuel present, hence "black smoke". A properly set up engine should barely, if at all, smoke under acceleration, so no you should NOT see extra (or any) black smoke under load. Your 6.5 is NOT a fully modded drag or puller like you see on the cover of Diesel Power spewwing out clouds of black smoke, they're designed to over fuel, 6.5's are not!

Your EGT's concern me. Under load, you should be running 950 - 1000*F constant, with perhaps a brief rise to 1100 peak. At 1200*F you run the very real possibility (READ: IT WILL HAPPEN EVENTUALLY IF IT CONTINUES) of melting valves, cracking a head, or melting down a turbo or any combination of the three. BACK OFF THE THROTTLE IMMEDIATELY IF YOUR EGT'S GET THAT HIGH!!! 1200*F indicates that you're over fueling. What do you have for intake and exhaust on your rig? If you are still running stock box with paper filter and stock exhaust, there's your problem. Open up your intake and flow in more air, junk the stock exhaust for a 3" turbo down pipe and a 4" exhaust.

Hope this helps.

Lubbock. My sympathies :D must be gettin' a little warm down there. Sounds like your set up is right. Your EGT's under load concern me. If you drop your intake temp significantly, your EGT's should drop correspondingly. Think about intercooling, either mechanical or chemical.

Personnaly, I'm a fan of water/methanol injection, as the 6.5 was never envisioned as having an intercooler, so there is just no room in front of the radiator (short of removing the grill) to put one where it's supposed to belong. So instead, we compromise and mount them low under the bumper (not good for it or any javelinas, 'dillos, 'coons, 'possums, wet snowdrifts, mud bogs, or anything else we hit) or on top of the motor where airflow is not the best without extensive mods.

With water/methanol injection, it is on demand of the engine, cools your intake 200+*F, the methanol is added fuel, and you'll see 40-70 more HP!

With A&M, UT, and OSU on our schedule this year, it'll be one more year before we can get together for a TT v NU game. If you can get up here, I can get tickets. Just don't ask for NU-USC, OU, or CU, just can't get them reasonably priced.

Adelante Grande Rojo! (Sorry about the spelling, French was my forte in high school, not Spanish)

P.S. My last two kids were born the weekend of the NU-KU game in 97 and 98. My 97 boy was born at 4 pm on Saturday, with a 6pm kick-off. The hospital did not have FSN on its cable system, so my wife "let" me go over to my best friends' house at 5pm to watch the game. Our doctor came in at 3am the night before while she was in labor to check on her wearing his HUSKERS sweatshirt. Our 98 daughter was supposed to be induced Saturday morning until I had my wife call the doctor and ask if we could wait until after the game. The doc called back and said sure. I never doubted our doctror's love for the Huskers.

How's that for fan loyalty, scheduling a birth around a football game? I could tell you about how we had the 86 NU-Indiana away game on the big screen live at our wedding reception, as everyone except morons don't schedule a wedding on a home game weekend as there's no rooms available at the hotels/motels.

Have you checked your IP timing, and corrected it as neccessary? Remember, the timing chain on these will stretch over time and retard your injection timing (just like a distributor on a gas burner). Diesels are sensitive to injection timing, a small change of a couple of degrees makes a huge difference in the combustion process. That's why the newest DI Common rails inject up to five times during combustion - complete fuel burn for more power.

Before thinking about dropping in a Cummins, check out your IP/timing. The Cummins conversion is NOT as easy as you think, it entails frame and suspension modifications, some tweaking of the firewall, and massive amounts of fabrication and electrical work to get the accessories and wiring harnesses to interface. And that's just for a mechanical IP! If you insist on doing the swap, your best bet is using a 12 valve Cummins as it is mechanically injected and is the simplest electrically.

For a 93 4x4 K3500 Cummins swap, Diesel Power had an article on a guy who did it in I believe the Dec or Jan issue (check on-line) and the April issue with their 6.5 build project lists the pros and cons of various diesel swaps for ease and cost.

I'm trying to get tickets for NU-USC, including using the connection of my best friend since childhood's brother-in-law who is a Corporate Vice President of Disney advertising. That's how I got tickets to NU's Rose Bowl game, he had friends over at ABC and ESPN (Disney subsidiaries), and wound up with 34 tickets that he sold for face value to everyone back here in Nebraska (he live in LA) just to get more Husker fans out for the game.
