Two questions, does it actually say the resistor number on the resistor? Also, how do you remove one that is already in a PMD if you need to replace the PMD. Thanks in advance for any help.

Go to Walts website and look at FAQ it tells you there how to remove the resistor and the number is printed on it.

Garth, I have looked at the FAQ section and it mentions what the resistor does and why you would change it, but nothing about HOW to change it. I did look at the product description and saw that the number is stamped onto the resistor.

When you pull the plug out of the PMD and look inside the PMD part you will see a green/ yellow backing with the resistor number to the bottom. There is a line under the letter to save confusion between 6 and 9. there is a hole through it on each end. Open a paper clip (used for everything on these vehicles) and put a hook in each end. Insert into each hole and gently remove this board. I have just done this now to my spare one. This board fits over the pins and there is metal around pins 2 and 3

The PMD that I just got a month ago didn't have a resistor in it. Is that normal? I'm wondering if there was a resistor in my truck at all. I was under the impression that this resistor thing just changed factory peramators in the PMD.

Infact I don't believe that any of the PMD's I've had had a resistor in them.

Usually they'll throw codes and have rotten power output.........

Gotta have a resistor, then the factory steps up or down through 1-9 to calibrate the pump.

That is really interesting. Never got a code and never had a problem. Dose anyone have the resistor that they removed from their truck??

If you got no resistor in the PMD, no problem, it won't give you a code about it. The only thing that the resistor will do is to adjust the fuel supply for the IP, so that all pumps delivers enough and the same amount of fuel. But you can "upgrade" your PMD with a higher resistor to deliver more fuel to the pump, but the PMD or ECM will check the resistor number only every 50 starts or remove the battery cable for about 30 minutes. Than it will check for directly.

With no resistor, the ECM is supposed to default set itself to a #1, which is the lowest fuel delivery setting. Depending on year/ECM you may not throw a code. PMD's DO NOT come with a resistor, you are supposed to install the one off the old PMD onto the new PMD. Evidently, somewhere along the way somebody forgot to. You might as well order a new #9 and install it, as it gives you about 6% more fuel delivery than a 4-5 does.

i actually em changing mine tonight but the one i have in is a #1, if the #9 gives me 6% over a 4-5 then ill get way more haveing started with a #1. am i thinking right on this one? also thanks for the tip on getting that microscopic resistor out of there. its a trick. thanks guys

Yep, you'r right. You should get more than the 6% but don't know exactly how much more. I think it won't be more than 10%. If you want that the ecm recognize the new resistor immedeately, you should remove the battery cable for about 30min. , than reconnect and start. The ECM will check for the resistor only every 50 starts or after disconnecting the batt cables.

thanks a lot for the reply. i actually had the battery cables off for a few days. I was removing the entire intake manifold to get to the PMD and then i extended the harness and relocated it and cleaned the manifold. Now i just have to switch the resistor and gut my intake system and ill be finished with this project for a little while. can't wait to see the fruits of my labor... thanks again for the tips
