My dually shifts pretty hard from first to second usually only when I'm heavy on the throttle. I've been told that the culprit is my hypertech chip; supposingly to adjust the shift points for better "pullin" performance.

see if you can have it scanned for codes. There is a chance one of the solenoids in the tranny is either leaking a pinch or has some sort of debris (tiny piece of metal) in it and is causing the hard shift.
Have you changed the fluid since it has started this?

I don't own a diesel pick-up. I am a reliability consultant and a manufacturer's rep for lubricants, fuel treatments and various lube related shop equipment and oil analysis. I'm here because I have professional interest with all machines and vehicles. If it uses lubricants I'm into studying it. I drive a 2001 S-10 2.2 because I need the mileage that type of truck offers, I average 70,000 miles per year. My little truck used to shift very hard and take a long time shifting out of first gear. Just seemed to be struggling to make it happen. It stopped and has never done it again. I had Lubrication Engineer's Hydro-Static Power Fluid # 7500 put in by power flushing. That's it. If you live in a cold part of the world I would recommend their # 1150 ATF, it has a pour point of -53*F.
