View Full Version : Flywheel Bolts Hitting Disc

I just tried to switch over my 6.2 from the turbo 400 to the sm -465, i got a flywheel/disc/plate from a 6.5 and went to install it. The flywheel bolts are hitting the springs on the disc. I made sure i put the correct side towards the flywheel. I even tried a new disc from the parts store and still the same thing.
Could the flywheel be worn down too much? The guy i got it from said it had 5000mi on it. I called him and he was baffled. My next guess is to machine the bolt holes to recess them to clear.
Any thoughts?

take to the heads of the bolts with a side grinder.

I'd like to be able to take this thing off at some point. I think I'm going to go with a combination of recessing the surface and taking a little off the tops of the bolts.
The bolts are already low profile bolts and if you know what they look like, the heads are probably less then 1/4" thick.
My buddy took a look at the flywheel for his 350 and he said that his had counter sunk holes for the bolts. Any way to do this without a mill?

I've done things like that using a stone and a high speed drill (slow going) better a ROTOZIP spiral saw with a stone in it, it's like a big Dremel. Or put a stone in a router, a little difficult to see where you are grinding.

So apparently the flywheel I have is from the 98+ or the smf replacement kit. I need a GM model number for the clutch disc that I need. I believe its different from the gas disc. Can anybody verify this for me? Can anybody give the the part number or where to buy one? (hopefully just the disc, its all i need).
The disc I have has 1 ring of springs on it, ive heard the diesel one has 2 rows, is the disc that im looking for the 2 row of spring type?

in my mis-spent youth I screwed around with these kind of problems and spent much time in the parts shops that were so interested in the chalenge that we matched up, more or less, clutches that would do the job, real mongrul matches.

Was that even English?

for what it is worth. I just pulled my engine and it had a solid flywheel and the disc had an 2 sets of spring. (An inner and outer set)

njdevi11, are you criticising my english? or you don't understand what I said? No offense taken.

I think your english is fine, i just don't understand the intent of your statement. Granted I had been at the bar earlier that night I replied, basically I read it and said to myself "Huh?" are you telling me to just go to the parts store and tell them to start pulling clutch discs? It sounded more like a rant like this: "It's called the '80s. Ford was president, Nixon was in the White House, and FDR was running this country into the ground." (Movie: Out Cold [2001]) Then advice on how to find a solution to my problem.
Craig: Do you have a part number for that clutch disc? I went to the dealer yesterday and he just wasn't willing to help me after I said "standard transmission"
I called around a few places and got a price of close to $400-$500 for a complete clutch kit. Nobody sold just the disc. Anybody know where I can get this elusive disc? I might just say screw it and get the centerforce kit.

I got a SMF from an older (I think the correct bolt pattern is for carbureted 350's, i got the flywheel from a friend with a 350 he said his bolt pattern was bigger.)
It bolted right up, i swapped the ring gears, the start motor engages and the engine started fine.
After that you are using all regular gas clutch components. So its a hell of a lot cheaper then buying this special for diesel engine crap. Flywheel ($100 vs. $500) Disc ($30 vs $160) add the ring gear from rock auto for $25 and call it a day.
I think the gasser flywheel i got is much more heavy duty then the one thats made for the diesel anyway.

I hope you are going to use a multi-disc clutch. Remember that although the torque of yor 6.2 is comparableto that of a built gas-burner motor, the peak is several thousand RPM lower (1800ish) and if you are slipping clutch to crawl and/or climb you will fry it in no time!
I had a friend burn/rip the facing right off his disc, and destroy his flywheel and pressure plate on his NV4500 K2500 6.5TD in 4 low trying to pull a cottonwood tree stump, a very valuable ($) :D lesson he learned the hard way!

If anybody has a part number for the correct disc i need im all ears. If not im going to wait till I trash this clutch and then install a center force dual friction clutch.
I don't think i need a multi disc setup because of my low gearing, it should be pretty easy on that end of the drive train.
