Just bought 1998, K1500, 4x4, from dealer. The check engine light came on, so i took it back and it was taken to a dealership, and mentioned the excessive smoking. it looks like a hose was changed, and the light hasent came on since, but it still shoots an excessive amount of black smoke when accelerated. once up to speed has a constant grace mode. cdr is bad, and it has 22 pounds at the splitter and 15 pounds at the waste gate. any help would be greatly appreciated!

- things i already changed -
+Wastegate Solenoid Valve
+Performance Air Induction Kit
+Air Filter Service Indicator

it still sounds like you have an intake restriction.
Just how much black smoke ? Garth

(smoke is constant) on acceleration heavy black smoke... once at cruising speed light grey... deccelerating (not giving it any gas) no smoke. so everytime I give it gas to speed up it pours out black smoke in heavy streams. very poor on milage.

i removed the upper plenum, to install my boost guage (to check my turbo) AND the lower plenum is caked/and loaded with carbon (looks like a mountain range). I cleaned the upper and lower as best i could. is there anything else i should be checking for damage? and what would cause this???

I wouldn't think "carbon". Probably more like dirt that got past air filter built up on oil deposits from cdr valve. A thin coat of oil in the intake is pretty normal. I would completely clean the intake (shop vac).

I was getting alot of smoke on acceleration and at crusing speed. Walt advised a new FSD Heat-sync. Installed and the smoke went away totally, even under hard acceleration.

I quick thing to check is the EGR system. Mine is frigged up with a bad solinoid. No power lots of smoke. Take the vacume line off the EGR and plug it where it goes to the solinoid and see if it takes the problem away. If so, replace according to Walts directions.

After I Removed Ther Upper Plenum To Install A Boost Gauge, I Discovered The Lower Plenum Was Filled With Carbon Formations. After Cleaning It Out I Found A Round High Heat Gasket In My #7 Intake Runner. It Went On The Bottom Side Of The Egr Port. Therefor Causing The Engine To Never Boost And Having The Egr Never Closed. All Cleaned And All Gaskets Installed It Runs Like A Dream.
