Does anyone know what the Army and USMC do to address the PMD heat related failure on 6.5's. I just replaced my 2nd PMD in 02 express 3500 van. 7/2006 118K replaced with remote mount PMD and Cooler purchased and inst at local Detrot MI diesel shop. Lasted less than 12 mos, 15K mls. This time, I inst SS Diesel unit. I haven't been able to find any reference to PMD failure on military 6.5TD, anywhere on the net. According to AM General site, 6.5TD are running strong.

Aren't they using mechanical pumps?

Right now they all have manual pumps and wastegate controllers. Their turbos are also setup like the civilian van with the turbo behind the intake up high.
But we may see some changes there. Some of the larger engines (903 Cummins and 8V92 Detroits) are getting outfitted w/ ECMs.

Are you sure this is true? I think the latest greatest are using the electronic now. (since they switched to the 4l80 in them)

They may have on the newest and latest. I notice on their website they list both electronic and manual injection. The ones we are rebuilding are still manual pump and wastegate and aren't being upgraded that I know of. I don't know what the brand new models from AMG have on them. The frames are also stiffened to handle the added weight from the up-armor kits.

I think I stand corrected.... found a post elsewhere that states a 2006 is still manual....

the latest and greatest HMMWV for the military still uses a mechanical pump, and a TCM for the 4L80E... The TCM gets its engine vitals from a TPS mounted on the side of the pump, A crank position sensor, and an engine speed sensor. It is still a very simple system to work on. The TCM is mounted in a waterproof box and still uses an EPROM.
