is there any mods 1 can do for these stock air boxes or do we have to use $3-400 models that still suck from same place as stockers? Anyone have proof these actually work or is it all hype? Seems to be posts for and against these aftermarket kits!

I ordered an intake from SSDiesel and after installing it I was concerned it was drawing hot air from the engine compartment so I looked for something to adapt the filter to the place where air is drawn from outside the engine compartment. I found this plastic sump component at the Home Depot plumbing department. I say the piece is a sump component because it was located by the sump pumps, not exactly sure what it is but the barcode tag with the SKU number is still attached(You can see it in the picture) if you want I will post it. It worked like a champ. I attached a picture. The filter fit in pretty tight but I used a piece of 1/16" silicone hose as a seal. The tube from the turbo to the filter came from auto zone. It was designed to hook up to cold air intakes (3"). It did silence the turbo whistle much to my disappointment.

That is a three way connector for a ground drain.

I just picked up a 95 Suburban and I'm working on my own intake. So far so good. I"ve removed the lower driving light, below the head light, stuck a 4 inch flex dryer hose there, reduced it to 3 inches at the turbo. This snakes around under the battery which I had to cut off the bottom supporting bracket. I'm going to do the same from the drivers side and then connect them. Already from the one side i can feel and see tremendous sucking power from the hose at the front of the truck. I was looking for that "Forced air ram" effect.

I hope like hell you have a high flow air filter/air box in place on your system pre-turbo. While straight induction MIGHT be ok on a drag truck, with your air pick up locations you're a prime candidate for injesting butterflys, grasshoppers, road debris, etc, which without a filter will make quick work of destroying your turbo and top end, if not the entire motor. Seriously. Even top fuel drag racers run a foam filter in their scoops to protect a $15K motor from injestion damage.

I hear ya on the need for a filter. I've already looked at a open box air duct I saw at home depot that I believe I can modify to make fit in that space below the right side head light. I'll also take and make bigger the inside firewall so the home depot open vent box fits snug. I then plan to have three filters, starting with an outer metal style open grid, followed by a pre foam style, topped off using an adaptive standard automotive square style air filter. I'll do the same on the other side as well and then link them together. More air is good, right?

if my front duel air tunnel intake ram air thing works as I think it should, is there still any need for an intercooler, since I'll be pulling in plenty of cold air from the outside front of my truck?

the intercooler is used because the turbo heats the air while compressing it. You don't need that much extra air for a 6.5 but the cooler air is good for temps. My old chev has as standard what you have made.

98 only have 1 headlight so cant remove it I'll have to look deeper and see what can be done! just LAZY hoping someone else solved issue!

on my 95 suburban i unscrewed the passenger side driving light below the top headlight and behind it is a roundesh metal wall with sort of hole shape to it. On the other end I unscrew and removed the stock air intake box. From the outside I took my shop vac, put the vac hose on exhaust, which blows alot of air, stuck the hose in front of the truck where the light was and to my surprise I felt very little air coming out of the hole into where the intake box would be. So I took out my battery, that cheap poor fitting snorkle intake in-between piece out, and snaked in my own direct 4" to 3" direct tubing. I'm wanting to do the same to the other side and then join them together soon.

Gee guys, here's a solution for ya.. Bore a big hole in the hood right above the turbo, put a 3" pipe with a 90* bend in it to stick up through said hole and mount a big honkin' K&N on the end of it..... :D Would be great for fording rivers too! :D

Like the Landcruisers in OZ, have an intake snorkle up the windshield pillar.

There was a fully tricked out 6.5 Suburban in California on e-bay couple of months back that had a custom-made snorkel on it made by the company that manufactures A/M snorkels for Land Cruisers, Jeeps, and Range Rovers. This thing was lifted, custom dual exhaust, front and rear winches, custom front and rear bumpers, brushguard, fully optioned with leather interior. It was built for some winery, and the owner had it prepped that way so it could be shipped to Panama for use on the estate down there, but was never sent. It only had 18K miles on it, all driving around the winery in Cali.!! Couldn't bid on it, the price was already way over $20K!!
