I have recently noticed that my truck is slowly goin down hill!!! can anyone help please?
1st. - my turbo seems to be shutting down after first gear. im not positive on what it might be but would the wastegate be sticking for some reason?? it just pulls hard in first and then no turbo, black smoke, and no power. it runs better when the engine is cold though, im lost?? when the truck is at idle i cant move the wastegate arm at all is that normal? and everynow and then it will turn on the check engine light but it will go off just a few seconds after.
2nd.- it just now started to stall on me wherever, whenever. i cant hardly take off from a stop without it completely shutting down, and sometimes it doesnt shut down, i just get off the throttle and pedal it a lil and it comes right back. when i accelerate and drive over a bump in the road it also will shut my truck down??? ive checked battery conections, could it be at the solenoid or is there another possibility?

Tell us a fault code.Put a paper clip, openned, between the 2 top right connectors of the diagnostic plug to the left under the steering wheel, and count the blinks of the SES light when the ignition switch is on. DO NOT START THE ENGINE. The first series of blinks is the 10's the second series is the units. it will keep repeting the series. Then press the brake and the accelerator down at the same time for 15 seconds and after switch off and the code will be gone.

First thought i had was that it could be the typical PMD failure, but after reading that the engine sometimes won't shut off, i'm thinking that the fuel shutoff solenoid at the IP is the problem.

Chevylover, what he meant was that it almost shut down on takeoff, but easing of the accelerator prevented it, he still has not said what the code is.

thanks guys i will half to check out the code for you grancito and let you know..... but im still able to limp it around right now for the time being. when i get the time, probably tomorow i will try the codes. As far as the PMD goes might that be the problem with all of the malfunctions as far as turbo failure??

The code will be a real help, you could have a wire breaking or a bad or lose plug somewhere, you could try moving the wires while it is running, seeing as bumps cause a problem, but first the code.

Alright well the SES light blinked once and then 3 more times only faster and it seemed to repeat itself, now how you figure what code that is im not sure. now am i suppose to leave the clip in when i press the throttle and the brake becasue it seems i cant remove the SES light now?

OK, here it is, the gospel on OBD I.
When you plug the jumper in, the first code you will get is: one blink. .pause..blink,blink. This is the number 12. This will repeat three times. This code is just the ECM saying "Hi, I'm here, and I'm in diagnostic mode."
Any stored codes will come in two distinct groups of blinks that will repeat three times for each code set. When finished displaying stored code(s), or if none are present, it will again repeat the number 12 three times to tell you "Hey, I'm done spilling my guts to you, or I have nothing to say 'cause there's nothing abnormal stored. Please return me to normal functioning."
Any Chilton or Haynes diesel manual will have a section on ECM codes, and give their meanings, or post them up here and we'll answer them.

Mine will only blink a 12 if there are no codes in there. When there is a code it only blinks that instead of starting with the 12. While it is blinking, press the brake and accelerator for 15 seconds, then turn the key off, then remove the clip and it should be cleared. However, it is strange that you got a SES light and have no code.

Incase yours blinks the 12 three times then the fault code, try again, however you may have removed the fault code and will have to go for a drive till the SES lights up again. Also, after pressing the pedals, the SES code will continue to blink until you switch off, then if you switch on again you'll find it has gone.

Well i will check again and see how long it blinks 12. As far as the SES light goes, it will come on when there is no turbo at all and then goes back off within a matter of seconds. It seemed like today when i drove to work the turbo was staying around though but it is cooler in the morning, about 65', and it was shutting off constantly on the way back with the temperature around 85'. is temperature playing a roll in this also??

ok, I asked this question a week or so back as I had black smoke at 105 deg high speed towing and got a 78 code, "waste gate solenoid fault". Haven't had it since, but one reply was to replace the solenoid. I agree that these type of things fail when hot. However, there is a heat sensor on the intake extension, and my question " does this cause the turbo to shut down when the intake air temperature is high" was not answered. May someone answer this.
