Hello all-

Just found about this site and forum and I have to say I am glad to know that I am not the only one out there that is still driving a 6.5. I just cannot see giving these car dealer 30 to 40k for new and used newer diesels.

So thats what brings me here. I have a 1998 GMC 2500 PU. When I am driving down the road I can hear my turbo winding up and down. After you accelerate for a few seconds the turbo winding up stops and you hear nothing. I also notice going up hills or with a load in tow after the noise of the turbo stops I get and large EXCESSIVE amount of black smoke. I have a tremendous loss of power. This usually happens about half way down on the accelerator.

From what I have been reading it sounds like it might be my turbo's waste gate. I am looking for any imput and with some money will my 6.5 have the balls that it use to.

I am also tossing around the idea of putting all the extra's that ssdiesel sells like the 80 hp chip, 4 inch exhaust, marine injectors, possibly a new turbo.

Also could some tell me a little more about this FSD Heat Sync thing that seems to be ssdiesel big seller and is it worth it.

Thanks Lthrneck

For the mods someone else needs to advise you, but are you getting an SES light on the dash, the waste gate solenoid for the turbo could be at fault, but I have had one incedent of turbo shut down under extreme temperature, and suspect a temp sensor on the intake, am waiting for more info on this.

Wastegate could be sticking

Today my wife towed our two place horse trailer and after traveling about thirty miles the SES light did come on and the smoke was an issue like usual and there was no power thinking more and more about that waste gate issue. What ya think guys??

I had a similar problem with my '98. Check and make sure you have vacuum from the pump to the wastegate solenoid and from the solenoid to the wastegate actuator. If you don't have at least a steady 15inchs/mercury than you may have a vacuum problem. The next step would be to check the wategate actuator. With the engine off (caution it may be hot) the actuator should move easily however it should not move with the engine on. It may also be the intake temp sensor, boost sensor, or wastegate solenoid. Are you able to scan for codes?

YOU need to have the code retrieved by an OBDII reader. I'm not sure if I have made a suggestion to you on another post, or to someone else about disconnecting the intake air temp sensor on top of the intake extension when the problem occurs, to see if it is mal functioning.

I have the same problem with my 97 right now and the code is for the boost sensor. on order and should be in this week. I'll let you guys know

I'm going to post my findings for, and called "turbo shut down, black smoke" as a new thread as I've been replying to other posts for the same problem.

Just remember that even if you have the code that indicates an issue with the boost solenoid or sensor doesn't nessessarily mean that those parts are the problem. I could be something affecting those sensors. I. E. stuck wastegate = no boost = code for boost sensor. Etc. etc.. Remember that the codes are generated from a list that is based on the iterpretation made by you computer that has the processing power of a Speak and Spell.

In short check the easy free stuff like connections and mechanicals before you start throwing parts at it. The trucks compter and a scanner can be a great tool but it is no match for your brain. Learned this the hard way.

Best of luck,

Yes, thanks, point taken, noticed crazy computer response today.
