I just installed a remote thermometer in my Heat Sink ,just to know what is the temperature under the hood, with my average driving at 90 KPH, The temp was 31degrees C when it comes to Stop light it goes up to 34 C,
When I shut down the engine the temp goes up to 44 C, What a big difference I Installed the Heatsink close to the ABS module on the left fender
not on top of the engine..

Hey thanks for that info, good to get some temps.

What does the FSD Heat Sync exactly do and is it worth the money. Also could you comment to my forum post Lots of Black smoke, loss of turbo noise. Thanks Lthrneck

It keeps the PMD/FSD cool so that it does not burn out, important at $300 and the engine won't run without it. Your black smoke problem, unplug the sensor on top of the intake extension, it looks like a brass nut with 2 wires coming out the top. Only for a test, as this is probably shutting down your turbo when the air warms up.

Thanks for the input, now I know where I'll be mounting mine :D

Nomad, or anyone here, I've been in communication w/ our host here and he is pretty insistant that the location on the fender near the ABS module is not preferable over the mounting location on the top/side of the intake manifold.

Would you happen to have thermal data taken from the two areas under the hood? I'm in the process of installing the FSD and would appreciate your insights.

I have a SSdiesel Heat-synk mounted on the intake for over a year and no problems with it at all.
Walt has done lots of reaearch on it and I take him at his word..
A good thing to do with all diesels is to idle them for a minute or two before shutdown, Especially after a long pull it will slow the turbo down and you dont have to worry about oil flow after the engine stops, so no oil flow no lube for the still spinning turbo

My cooler of PMD is made in house, it's a heatsink of an electronic semiconductor...but it runs good :D

and beetween heatsink and the pmd I put a litle of termal grease, used in proccesors of computers, is't amazing, 99.9% of silver,

here's the info :

I don't really care what walt says, mounting in the grill as I did is by far, IMHO the best way.... And by soldering extentions to my PMD harness vs a plug-in extension, no plug corrosion issues either.

With ALL electronics......... the cooler you keep em, the longer they last. sure, walt's setup may last 7 years, but mine will still last longer.... I'm confident at this point that my PMD will still be fine when the 4 wheels of the truck take different turns at an intersection someday.........

I say get Walts FSDsync, but mount in grill as I have shown in-depth here.... Best of both worlds. Helps Walt's business and utilizes his product to it's best potential. I got my heatsink off of ebay on the cheap (~ $30) but I had to cut, drill, tap, etc to make it work.........

I agree, I had a new Walts located heatsync here in 40°C and with the engine shutting down at 90°C ,it did not want to start after everything on top of the engine heated up. Conversion 40°C is 106°F, 90°C is 194°F, how hot did the PMD get? Someone expert in electronics on this site I hope will post the maximum opperating temperature for non military electronics, I believe it is only 140°F. My PMD is now in the front bumper and no problems.

Well to answer your question about the heat sink being worth the price. i just recently bit the dust and bought a new PMD $385.00 Instead of installing it on a Heat Sink, I took the advise of a mechanic and ran the wires inside my cab and mounted it inside the aircon duct. Well That was a BIG BIG mistake. Needless to say it almost burned my truck down and I killed a brand new PMD. I ordered a new PMD and a SSdiesel Heat-synk and installed it today. Drove all over the place with it and I made it alot further than I did a few weeks ago. So in my honest opinion its well worth the $135.00.

I will be re Installing the FSD underneath the front bumper by the license plate holder,I will let you know guys what is the difference between free flowing fresh air and inside the hood.. reading shrtly...:D
