Is it possible to run a 480le transmission in overdrive in interstate conditions towing over 10k without burning in up?

In my opinion ? Yes, but only if the TCC is closed and the tranny doesn't have to shift often between 3 and OD because of hills and so on. I would do it only if the scenery is flat.

On that same note about the hills.. Is it bad to manually shift down into 3rd when a hill is coming up?? Where I tow there is Miles of flat and then a small climb and then Miles of flat again. So I normally leave it in drive till I get to the hill then downshift. Is this gonna kill my tranny?? Thanks all

No, it isn't. Coming back from Burlington, IA on US Hwy 34 to Lincoln with a '65 Galaxie 500 on a toter behind me, I would manually drop it down to D from OD before pulling any of the hundreds of hills. It is a LOT easier on the tranny than letting the TCC lock and unlock repeatedly as the tranny hunts between D and OD. Anyone familiar with the terrain of southern Illinois and Iowa knows it's a series of steep rolling hills left over from the glaciers of the last major ice age, and a semi-trucker's gear-crunching nightmare on the back hiways.
