Hey all, is there a simple, reasonably accurate way to determine if a fuel injector is bad? I have a stock 94 'burb with the 6.5 TDI and 160k on the clock. I got it used and don't really have too great of a history on the vehicle. It seems to have a surge/cutout on the highway @ about 2000-2500 rpm, has a very hard time getting out of it's own way,and smokes under heavy throttle (especially with the A/C on). Fuel and air filter are new, and injector pump was replaced about 20k ago. I was told that it might be an injector issue. I am showing faults 36 (Injection Pulse Width Error, Response Time Long) and 78 (Wastegate Solenoid Fault). Vaccum checks good at the solenoid and accuator, the wastegate rod moves freely with no vac, and is very hard to move at idle, so it appears to be working ok. This is my first venture into the diesel world so I have a bit of catching up to do. Thanks for any help anyone could pass on

don't believe the 78, I have had that and in the end 62 the computer gets confused. You need to put a pressure guage on the inlet manifold, then you know what's happening. Stuppid me remembered someone say drill the hole with the engine running, wrong hole, anyway the turnings disappeared down the hole into the engine, C'est la vie. There is no boost at idle.

i had similar problems. My truck is 95 though. I was getting 78 -- wastegate and 34 35 pulse width to short pulse width too long. They first said it was injectors. then they said i had a fuel problem and dropped my tank and cleaned it and the lines. still haveing the problems and truck would turn off and run when it wanted too. Finally broke down and bought a PMD and it runs great. I still get the 78 but thats because my solenoid is not connected to any vaccum. I can run a vacuum line to it, but then am not sure where to go from there.

you run it to the wastegate actuater the passenger side in front of the turbo.

or just run a line from the vacuum pump to the wastegate.:) You will make boost and will not set any soleniod faults unless the soleniod is truely bad. Only do this for a test, then fix the problem. If you are keeping the vacuum control system install all new vacuum line. The factory plastic line is prob in bad shape and starting to leak everywhere.
