my transmission that has already been rebuilt wont shift out of 2nd gear. i took it to a shop he said that it needs a new transmission or rebuilt again. i seem to think that it isnt that tranny. maybe electrically??? any thoughts??

How long ago was it rebuilt? and who did it? Maybe the 2-3 shift valve solenoid isn't working. wire came unhooked, solenoid shorted out, wire pinched/rub through and shorted out. Whats the fluid look like? Valve could be gummed up. Need a few more specifics other wise its all just speculation.

it was rebuilt about 2 yrs ago. also when dropped pan fluid smelled and looked good no metal in pan. it drove fine one day and next i took it to get the tranny serviced and the mechanic said it looked fine and then i left and drove it all day drove over 150miles. the next day noticed that shifting into OD was a little harder than normal. then i was at the farm hooking my truck up to a hay rake and it stalled on me then wouldnt go out of 2nd gear. i took it back to the mechanic that fixed it and he still doesnt know whats wrong. he says the the transmission needs replaced. does this help??

It gives me a little more help. I just kinda had the same sorta problem but it was in 3rd and 4th. one day it was fine, next it quit shifting 4th, and no torque converter lockup. sometimes i could get it to shift, and sometimes it would downshift just cruising down the road. I rember something from a bullitin from my rebuild kit about no shift from second gear, and something else. It said a filter, which the kit came with, be replaced. for some reason this filter fails and cause low line pressure so no shift. I'll go find my kit and the papers tomarrow and reread and get back to you tomarrow. Another thought, how many miles are on the tranny, and when it was rbuilt did the seperator plate between the valve body and tranny case get replaced? i know when i had mine apart the check balls had wore the holes in the seperator plate, it is possible to wear through and the the ball no longer move as it should which would cause no shift.
One more question, which direction were you going in when it stalled?

Does this 4L80E start in 2nd gear ? When there is an electrical problem with the transmission it will default to second gear. Usually it will throw a dtc but sometimes it will just default and stay in second gear. I have seen things as simple as an auto start system installed incorrectly and it messed with the security on the truck and that made it default to 2nd gear with no codes. Good luck with this problem

i was going forward and it started in first gear like normal and then it stalled i was maybe going 0-5mph. then on restart it started in 2nd gear and stayed. when he flushed my system he did the cooler also. the filter kit came from autozone! if that is the problem on the filter! hope this helps!

Check the throttle position sensor.ohm/volt meter 5vdc power in 0to5v out. Mine had a dead spot in it and caused all kinds of wierd tranny problems. Also remove a battery cable to clear any faults from the stall condition that may have set.
Just a thought.
