Default 1999 mercury mountaineer tranny issue

hey guys, i picked up a 1999 mercury mountaineer for a really good price. Everything works great except the transmission. It has reverse but it wont engage into first gear. Previous owner said 1st gear started to slip over the last year but once it got to 2nd gear all the other gears worked fine. But now it wont engage and acts like its in neutral when you put it into drive. truck has 123k miles. i added some lucas stop slip and checked tranny levels, they are filled properly. tranny fluid is red in color. any ideas???? thnx in advanced

You can do a search at ford-trucks.com and see if there is any info there which matches your situation. There are quite a few posts regarding transmission problems and fixes for them, but you should know which trans you have first.... basically 5spd or 4spd auto. which was largely dependent upon being either a V6 (5spd) or V8 (4spd).
