    Default Whining Noise

I recently noticed a whining noise coming from my Truck today every time I accelerate all the the way to my cruising speed. Truck is still driving perfect. Im praying its not the tranny. Any Suggestions? Im not good at figuring out drivetrain problems. What all should I check.

Is your wife in the back seat? Bet you laughted or hate me now. Whine is usually differential if it is a clean sound, if it is a fuzzy whine it is a bearing in the transmission, or pinion bearing in the diff.

I'w with grant, thinkin you have a rear difff issue. When you accel, then deaccel does it the sound change pitch? Check you fluid level/condition in the rear diff. Not sure if you have a factory gov-lock rearend or not, but the locking mechinism inside the carriers is noted for exploding, and sending small chunks out the rear diff cover, letting your gear oil out, and water/contaminents in. Check inside your rear wheels, and drums, if they are wet, you've probly got a rear wheel seal out and letting the gear oil out.

Found the issue. It was the freakin Power Sterring pump. When the sound came again today I u-turned to head back home and it got louder as i was turning. So when I got home I put the truck in neutral and tuned the wheels left and right and the sound got loder the more I turned the wheels. When I centered the wheels the sound got quiet. I checked the power steering pump and it barely had fluid on the stick. Just had a drop on the bottom of the stick.

Now you need to find the leak, my hydro boost became so bad the pump would run out every 3 hrs. Had it re-kitted here in Mexico, $100, a new one is $650.

I refilled the pump and its been a week and the fluid is at the same level. Its been about 6 yrs since I last checked it. Talk about over looking the pump.

I had my power steering pump replaced this year. Started leaking again and had the gearbox (am I saying that right?) replaced a couple of months ago. Today, I heard the whining sound again; stopped to check and the pump is near empty. Any suggestions what to look at and where it is located?

Check your power steering hose ends for signs of seepage/leakage. They are notorious for the aluminum crimp ends leaking where crimped to the rubber hose. That would be the first place to start. The next place is the front seal of the power steering pump. Then the steering gear box, then lastly the Hydroboost unit on the back of the master cylinder. That's the order in commonness of leakage.

It's the Hydroboost. Thanks for the advice.
