    Default power steering leak

For the past couple of years, my power steering fluid has leaked when I park on a hill or slant. Now, it is dripping constantly. I have had the gearbox and the power steering pump replaced but I am still leaking fluid. What should be checked next? Thank you.

Check the hoses, and under the booster behind the brake master. Also check for oil where the brake pedal rod meets the fire wall. Mine leaked oil between the master and booster. If it is leaking, a rebuilt is required, special tools are needed to repair it.

OK, it is leaking at the seal in back of the Hydroboost. Does this mean I should replace the Hydroboost?

Yes, replace it, rebuilt is about $100 at rockauto, you have to send the old one back. If the leak was between the master and booster, you could try replacing the seal, but to get at the seal near the brake pedal, the brake shop cut the rod, then welded it back together, I wasn't impressed with the method.

    The leak is here IMG_0475.jpgIMG_0474.jpg

Is the Hydrobooster the part between my finger and the firewall?

What is the Hydrobooster called on Rock Auto? I am a little confused because when I search for "hydroboost" and "Master Cylinder" I get the same results. ?

Yes, rockauto calls it a brake booster. The leak is at the front of the booster, so it could be possible to replace the seal. That is where mine leaked, but I had a brake shop rebuild the whole unit. No point in replacing the master cylinder if it is not losing fluid, nor has a bad feeling pedal. Also saves the problem of bleeding the system, the master will move forward enough to remove the booster.

I don't lose brake fluid but my brake pedal has never really felt "good" to me. I have never lost my brakes but now if I keep constant pressure on the brake pedal it will sink slowly to the floor. Is that from the booster or from the master cylinder needing to be replaced?

That is a master cylinder problem, worn out seal, easy to replace if you can find a kit. Yes rockauto has them, but some of their new masters are cheap, replace it, I put many kits in the old Chev that failed, then one worked for ever.

Look at the list of option codes in the clove box, so you get the master that suits you brake system size.

On Rock Auto, there some different sizes and bores available for the master cylinder.

The power brake boosters are from $95.00 to $386.00 and only 2 say “with Hydroboost”.

How do I know which will work for my truck?
