    Default click = starter? solenoid?

When I turn the key, I just get a "click". I have tightened the battery cables and the pmd screws. Recently, I would occasionally turn the key and get a click on the 1st try but on the second the truck would turn over. I tapped/knocked on the starter with a hammer but it does not help. I do not know how to check the starter solenoid.

Any suggestions before I tow it to a mechanic would be appreciated.

Could you guys tell me how to know whether the starter solenoid is bad?

A late reply, I have been away. Most likely worn out brushes. The starter needs to be removed, easy to check the brushes. You could check the terminal from the solenoid to the starter while in place, with a volt meter, while someone tries to start the engine.

Turns out the battery cable was worn and barely making a connection at the starter. Starting fine now. Thanks Grancito.

Good to have a simple fix.
