Have you tested or replaced the throttle position module? Your 96 model is in the years of bad ignition switches, which can cause various problems when it becomes faulty. My 95 had SES and throttle light for some time then 1st gear only, some days. A new ignition switch fixed it, it was a pain to fit, and was more than $100.
