Let me know if you find the problem. I went on long drive yesterday, and 1 hour from home at night, the volt meter was reading very low, I guessed it was the alternator regulator failure, the suburban had that twice in 10,000 miles. I stopped to check the belt, nearly removed the end of of my finger by touching the alternator fan which looked stopped, then on leaving the gauge showed normal voltage.

So this is what I know at this point... The volt gauge hasn't worked in the 11 or so years that I have owned the truck. In that time I have replaced both the alternator and the ignition switch so, my suspicion is the gauge itself and I am putting it low on the list of repairs. As far as the transmission, I have not had the limp mode repeat since it happened the once. I took it to the transmission shop and they said it looked good. When they rebuilt it several years ago they put a new VSS in it, so I'm going to wait to see if the problem repeats itself. I am however getting a 96 code but without a SES light. The 96 is supposed to be a cylinder balance issue with the #6 Cylinder. Though I can't think of what would cause that other then a bad/plugged injector. The injectors are new and I was very careful to make sure they were clean and the lines were also, when I put everything back together. Truck seems to run fine.

I'm just back from a 8 hour drive, some in the dark, and no gauge problem this time. I don't understand how the IP sees the cylinder imbalance. Ignore codes if nothing is malfunctioning. Your VSS signal is likely a connector problem.
