Default Truck will not shift out of park.

My truck column shift arm moves freely but stays in park. Is it the shift cable? ? Can a non-mechanic make this repair or should I get it towed?

No cable, its all linkage to trans. You may be able to disconnect linkage to see if it is in fact in the trans or steering column.

I thought that there was a cable in the models after 1995.

My 1995 has a cable, but not the 1994. You can feel the cable through the carpet, it runs under the driver's feet and makes a loop under the drivers seat then goes forward and through the side of the tunnel. Likely an easy replacement. Could just be disconnected at one end.

One more thing, I bought a new house, one that my wife both wanted and deserves. It is a little bit "upper-class with a snooty home-owners association" (heavy sigh) and she wants me to get rid of my old 6.5 truck that always starts but usually after after short cranking and smoking that the upper-crust (lawyer) neighbors stare and cluck at. I'm going to keep the wife happy, is anybody looking for/interested in an older 6.5 truck in Virginia? I have $800+ Michelin tires on it with less than 1,000 miles, a good pmd currently running and, in a box, a new new Pensacola Diesel pmd with new 6 foot replacement harness to the bumper hole.

You should have researched HOAs, many sad or horror stories. I hope it is worth the suffering to please your wife.

Huh. ‘95s have a cable that runs through the cab. Wouldn’t have guessed. Any thoughts why they did that? Sorry to hear about the HOA. MinE is still sitting in the street, fortunately my neighbors are REALLY tolerant. I’ve got an new set of lifters that I’m hoping fix my problem, but between homeschooling (damn COVID) and other obligations I haven’t dropped them in yet.

Cheap, I guess. It is a pain to change from the old chev or the 1994 to the 1995, I drive for miles in 3rd gear, because the shift distance on the gear shift is really short. I hope the new new lifters fix your engine problem

Turns out when I crawled under the truck the cable wan't broken, it just slipped off the arm/pin at the transmission end. I slipped it on and the truck changed gears fine. What can I do to keep it from coming off again, without replacing the cable? I'm guessing some type of bushing?

More good news, a friend has a nearby industrial lot where I can park the old truck.
